Dundee Football Club have been hit with two more injuries to key players during a pre-season bounce game. Defender Joe Wright suffered a hamstring tear and attacker Charlie Reilly fractured his toe in the closed-door clash with Falkirk last Thursday.

Steven Pressley, the manager, provided a concerning update on the club's fitness situation. "From an injury perspective, things are not very good just now," Pressley said. Wright's hamstring issue is expected to keep him out for a number of weeks, while Reilly is likely to miss up to three weeks of action.

Growing injury list

The fresh blows compound a severe injury crisis at Dens Park. Captain Simon Murray and midfielder Fin Robertson are both out for the entire season with ACL injuries. Striker Joe Westley, who is the team's top scorer this season with two goals in six appearances, is recovering from a broken cheekbone. Defender Ash Hay remains sidelined, and midfielder Ryan Finnigan is a doubt after picking up an ankle injury in the recent 2-1 defeat to Hearts.

Pressley did offer one piece of positive news regarding midfielder Ethan Hamilton. Hamilton missed training last week but is expected to be available for selection this weekend. Dundee currently sit sixth in the Premiership with seven points from their opening six matches, a record of two wins, one draw and three losses.

Finnigan's arrival

The manager also discussed the summer signing of Ryan Finnigan from Blackpool. Pressley revealed the club had tried to sign the midfielder in January before finally completing the deal. He described the recruitment team's work as good business.

Pressley said Finnigan brings physicality and athleticism to the squad. "He was the one coming through that everybody thought he could break into their team, but it didn’t quite work out for him," Pressley said, referencing the player's earlier career at Southampton. The manager noted he had seen Finnigan play during a loan spell at Walsall, where his son Aaron was also on the books.

With the season underway, managing the squad through this injury spell will be critical. The team's recent form shows one win, one draw and three losses in their last five league outings. Dundee's next match is an away trip to face Rangers, who are second in the table, on 30 December.
