Callum Jones says Dundee Football Club's belief is sky-high after a resilient 2-2 draw with Rangers at Dens Park. The midfielder, who scored the equaliser, declared the squad does not fear any opponent as they cement their place in the top four of the Scottish Premiership.
Dundee twice came from behind on Saturday night to earn a point. Bradley Fink opened the scoring in the 37th minute, but Rangers hit back through Badredine Bouanani and Nicolas Raskin before Jones capitalised on a Dan Neil mistake to level the score at 69 minutes.
Jones on squad belief and resilience
Jones said the team's confidence was tangible before the match. "We have got belief within the group and we went into the game on Saturday confident that we could get a result," the Welsh midfielder stated. That self-assurance has become a hallmark of Steven Pressley's side, who now sit fourth in the Premiership with 14 points from nine games.
"I wouldn't say we're disappointed with a draw," Jones added. "But we don't go into any game fearing anyone now. The belief and the togetherness is really high." He credited the manager's clarity and the time the core group has spent working under him for this growth. The result extended Dundee's recent form to two wins, a draw and a loss from their last four outings, a sequence that includes victories over Falkirk and Motherwell.
Squad depth and returning players
Despite the positive mood, Jones acknowledged the challenges of a compact squad. "We are a small squad at the minute but we’ve got boys coming back so we are only going to improve," he said. The return of players from injury will bolster a group that has already shown its grit, with top scorer Bradley Fink netting three times in seven appearances this season.
Jones praised his attacking teammates. "The boys up top complement each other," he said. "We’re such a threat. It’s good when we go forward now because we have an out-ball and we know they’ll hold it up for us." Hay scored a late winner against Falkirk earlier this month.
Jones himself is adapting to a different midfield role this season but is keen to contribute goals. His strike against Rangers was his first of the campaign. "I’d love to score every week but it’s not easy," he admitted. The team's fitness, he noted, is a key asset that causes problems for opponents in the latter stages of games.
Dundee's next test is an away trip to face St Mirren on 24 October. With the squad's belief firmly intact, they will aim to build on their solid start and close the seven-point gap to league leaders Celtic.
