Dundee Football Club is mourning the death of former captain and club legend Giorgi Nemsadze, who has passed away at the age of 54. The Georgian midfielder, inducted into the Dundee Hall of Fame in 2010, spent three influential years at Dens Park after joining in 2000.

He captained the side under manager Ivano Bonetti, becoming a key figure in an era that also featured Argentine star Claudio Caniggia. Nemsadze was a classy midfielder who later played under Jim Duffy before concluding his playing days with Dinamo Tbilisi.

Georgian football great

Nemsadze was a stalwart for his country, earning 69 international caps for Georgia between 1992 and 2004. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze led the tributes, describing Nemsadze's death as "a tremendous loss for Georgian football." Kobakhidze said: "With his distinctive playing style and perseverance, he left a lasting mark on the history of Georgian sport." The Prime Minister further praised Nemsadze as an outstanding professional and a leader with a fighting spirit.

After his playing career, which included spells at Hamburg, Trabzonspor, Grasshoppers, and Reggiana, Nemsadze moved into coaching and administration. He served as sporting director of Dinamo Tbilisi and most recently was head coach of the Georgian Under-18 national side, where he worked with young talents including Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. His work with the youth setup was widely respected within Georgian football circles.

Tributes from across football

Condolences have poured in from former clubs and across the football world. His legacy at Dundee remains secure, remembered as a Hall of Fame icon whose playing career defined a specific period at the club.

The current Dundee side, sitting 4th in the league table with 14 points from nine games, will carry that history into their next fixture. The team's recent 2-2 draw with Rangers, in which Bradley Fink scored, extended a run of form that reads two wins, one draw and one loss from the last four outings. Nemsadze's passing casts a shadow as the club focuses on the challenge ahead in Paisley.
